Below are some of the most common photography questions I get asked. Click on anyone of them to read the full article.

In the world of art and design, strict rule-followers rarely make waves or history.

Interestingly though, the best rule-breakers are often those who understand the rules best. It takes a clear understanding of the effects that occur when the "rules" of art and design are broken to know when and how to bend or break them.

Suggestions:

Learn the rules of your craft from professionals, books, observation, and practice. Strive to understand the reasoning behind the rules.

Learn what effects can be expected when those rules are broken.

Follow rules when the result will enhance your meaning and message.

Break rules when the result will enhance your meaning and message.

The Power of Inertia

Objects at rest tend to stay at rest. The same holds true for artists and designers. The most difficult stage of a project is often the very first step. The moment when we simply have to stop making excuses and BEGIN.

There's no great trick to overcoming inertia. It helps to acknowledge what's going on in your head that's keeping you from working, but at some point, you simply have to take the plunge.

Many an artist has found themselves miraculously breaking through to a higher level of their craft the day they mastered the Art fo Beginning.

I know alot of artist friends that believe in the occasional retreat time.

AKA, Me Time: time spent in a place where distraction is limited or eliminated; where artistic expression and production are allowed to flourish without outside interference.

Could a time of seclusion and focused effot be beneficial to your artistic growth or realignment?

Where could you go? Alone? For how long?

What would you bring? What would you leave behind? A sketchpad? A laptop or notebook? Paints and brushes? Books? What is stopping you?

Creative Reservoir

I feel that over time, our heads become a reservoir of concepts, information, and images. When we create, most of our ideas are made up of adaptations, variations, and combinations taken from this cache.

Therefore, the more we put into this "Creative Reservoir," the more we have to draw from when it comes time to create something new.

Our creative reservoir is one of our most important assets and it should be continually stocked, refreshed, and maintained through art, music, books, experiences, interactions, observation, learning, curiosity, and our own creative pursuits.

Keep it full, never let it run dry!
