I know I compare my running to photography a lot and it's because I think about everything and nothing while I'm exercising. Have you ever felt slightly bored on a run, walk or photography shoot. The first time on that path or trail seemed amazing but now it doesn't excite you as much even though nothing has changed? I know how you feel and I know the reason why and how to switch it up!
There nothing wrong with having a routine, I actually encourage it. They enable us get the mundane stuff done like work tasks, cleaning the house, getting the kids online for school and so on. There certainly isn’t anything wrong with having a routine per se, however, there may be benefit to shaking things up a bit.
When you walk the same path or take pictures in the same location your brain starts to shut off the thrill of excitement because it's already registered in your mind. Best way to compare it is to smell. Do you have Wallflowers or a candle you light, when you first light it, it smells amazing. After a few day you don't even smell it but other guests notice it right away. It's just the way our bodies work. The same thing happens to us as we get older. Have you noticed the days go quicker as we get older opposed to when we were younger. Nothing has changed, there are still 24 hours in a day, it's just that we are getting used to everything and our brains just turn them page like watching a movie twice, there is nothing to stimulate it.
So, the simplest and most easy thing I do to switch it up and jump start my routine is to do it backwards. Not everything, please get dressed first, feed the kids and get the camera ready. But this time, start the walk from the end or go on that trail but start from the place you finish and walk back. This slight change in perspective will change a lot. There will be things you've never noticed, the lighting will be different and time will go quicker. I know this was quick, but feel free to ask me for any details or additional tips.
